A collection of pen and ink sketches, including several of Dight's Mill on the Yarra river and views from a sketching trip in Gippsland. A brief extract from a diary kept by Russell makes reference to Count Strzelecki an explorer to Western Port in March 1840. Russell also made a sketch of huts built near Port Albert in 1841 for survivors of the Clonmel disaster.

Appointed surveyor at Port Phillip in 1836, Robert Russell assisted Robert Hoddle in laying out Melbourne. He became a private architect in 1839 and an amateur artist.
